Anti Virus Protection

I was discussing the Internet with a friend recently, and learned that he had no anti virus protection on his PC.

Yet he uses e-mail constantly for both business and personal communications. He is a successful professional and entrepreneur, skilled and experienced in seeing opportunities and risks.

But he had ignored the new risk of viruses and the damage they can do to a business.

A virus is any software that can be used to maliciously damage a computer. They are commonly received as e-mail messages or file attachments. Damage caused depends on the particular virus, but might mean deletion or alteration of critical business files.

Many viruses today also use the receiver’s e-mail address book to send a new virus-infected message to every address in the address book.

New viruses appear almost every day.

I advised my friend that he would certainly receive someday soon a virus infected e-mail message. The virus could severely damage his online capacity to service clients. Not to mention their feelings when he has forwarded the virus on to them too!

Potentially, a very serious impact on his business and its operations!!

I suggested he should immediately purchase an anti-virus software package - about $100, and about $50 p.a. for regular updates to protect against new viruses.

What action should you take?

  1. If you have not already done so, purchase and install anti-virus software. Three effective products are: Vet www.vet.com.au , McAfee www.mcafee.com , and Norton AntiVirus www.norton.com
  2. Set up, and use, a procedure to regularly update your anti-virus software regularly. Do this weekly at least. Updating can be done online using simple procedures - refer to the supplier’s web site for more information.
