Scam Alert!!

Do you have a domain name for your business - mybusiness.com.au?

Several Australian companies are running domain name scams on businesses like yours, taking advantage of unfamiliarity with domain names and their management.

The ACCC has recently successfully taken one of these companies to court.

What scams should you beware of?

Domain names are registered for two years at a time. You may have registered directly with Melbourne IT, or you may have left it to your web developer or ISP - there are many reputable options to choose from. But always the domain name should be registered against your business name.

There are now at least three scams being tried out on you. The scams seek to relieve you of money or your rightful ownership and management of the domain name, or both. The scams are:

An invitation to register your domain name for up to ten years- for a fee!
An invitation to register your domain name - issued well before its expiry date
A request for the ‘registry key’ - the PIN for your domain name - so that the details can be updated

These scams are sent by letter or fax - usually as a ‘Renewal Notice/Tax Invoice’.

auDA, the self regulator of Australian domain names, has issued several Consumer Alerts, most recently (23 March 2002) www.auda.org.au/about/news/2002032202.html

What action should you take?

  1. If you receive a domain name renewal letter or invoice from an unfamiliar organisation, ignore it.
  2. If you think you have been ‘scammed’, please contact us immediately.
