Is High Speed Internet for you? (continued)

Last issue we looked at the basic facts about ‘high speed Internet’: what is available, where, how much it costs.

Let’s now look at how it can be used in business. There are also some web resources for further research.

Firstly, use of high speed Internet in the home will probably be different to its use in a business environment: music and videos, games etc. And so the purchase justification will be different.

Secondly, your web site is probably at an ISP. The ISP provides the high speed download service to visitors.

So what does that leave for useful business applications? Consider high speed Internet if you regularly:

send or receive large files attached to e-mails: brochures, catalogues and proposals containing colour photos and diagrams; videos of advertisements, machinery operation site specific engineering analysis, etc.
need to access web sites which contain complex visual information which would normally download too slowly

Also consider high speed Internet if you need to be online all the time, because cost structures are based more on information volumes transmitted rather than time usage as for most dial up services.

Evaluate benefits carefully against likely costs. Benefits may include:

improved and more timely customer services - maybe new ones too
reduced ISP and telephone costs
higher staff productivity

One downside is a higher security risk - a firewall at least is essential.

For more information:

For information about the high speed Internet services available to you, see for example www.bigpond.com/broadband , www.optusbusiness.com.au/business , and www.ozemail.com.au . Some of these have handy cost calculators.
For vendor neutral information go to www.broadbandchoice.com.au . Vendor comparisons are available for most parts of Australia.
